Paco the Zonkey and his handler. The zonkeys came to Tijuana many years ago when blackandwhite photography was still the norm and the light-colored donkeys didn't show up well in the pictures, so they painted stripes on them. ... on this Friday of Memorial Day weekend, there were only four zonkeys on Avenida Revolucion. Back in the heyday of Tijuana tourism, as many as 25 of them could be found. (side note: in spite of the male name, this is a female zonkey - she replaced Paco who passed away after almost three decades of service. The handlers call her Paca, but she wears Paco's halter...)
This is the traffic line crossing back into the United States. The wait to get back to the US can be as many as three hours during busy periods. In the meantime, enterprising vendors set up in the middle of the traffic lanes and sell everything from ice cream to tacos to toys and hats to the waiting passengers.
Nick is a drug addict from the United States who came to Tijuana to see what he could see and do as many drugs as he could find. He says that in Tijuana, more crazy stuff than anyone could possibly image is there. When I took this photograph, he had been there about three weeks and still had all of his teeth. If he continues on his path of drug use, he will most likely lose many of his teeth within a few years.
