Paco the Zonkey and his handler. The zonkeys came to Tijuana many years ago when blackandwhite photography was still the norm and the light-colored donkeys didn't show up well in the pictures, so they painted stripes on them. ... on this Friday of Memorial Day weekend, there were only four zonkeys on Avenida Revolucion. Back in the heyday of Tijuana tourism, as many as 25 of them could be found. (side note: in spite of the male name, this is a female zonkey - she replaced Paco who passed away after almost three decades of service. The handlers call her Paca, but she wears Paco's halter...)
